I'll be facilitating a workshop entitled "Engaging Students through the Power of Creation" at the Active Learning Leaders, Student-Centered Learning Conference Saturday Feb. 22, 2014. Studies have shown that group work increases academic achievement, leads to long term retention, and enhances critical thinking skills, however, many students are resistant to the idea which can influence faculty into not assigning it. This workshop will focus on how to change group activities into active learning environments that engage students through the power of creation using technology.

@ONE Facilitated the VVC DEA last week. It was a beautiful day to learn about new and exciting trends in distance education. The event included a keynote presentation by Patricia James, Dean of Distance Education at Mt. San Jacinto College followed by four morning workshops, lunch and then repeated workshops in the afternoon. The event concluded with a Wrap-up and Reflection session. View the event registration flyer for more information about the workshops presented, and check out the photo gallery below to see what was happening throughout the day.
Developing a Course Specific Online Orientation
Friday, October 11
Southwestern College: Chula Vista, California
Do you ever feel like the technology gets in the way of delivering the content of your course? Have you considered creating an online student orientation specifically for your course? By creating an orientation that is explicit to your course, you can introduce the tools and structure your students need to be familiar with to succeed in your course. Using this course orientation as the check-in process removes the burden of "teaching" the tech while you are teaching the content. This workshop will provide you with example activities you can use in Blackboard, along with help links and videos, to get your students past the learning curve of the course management system and focused on learning the curriculum content.
